October 2012: there's nothing scary about adoption!

While welcoming a new pet into your home is a an important decision that bears careful consideration, we want you to know that there's nothing scary about it!

Some folks think of animal shelters as grim places packed with sad animals. They're afraid to visit because they're afraid of what they might see, that they might feel bad about not adopting all the animals, or maybe they've been put off by in the past by people who "like animals, not other people."

Not at the HSBC! Visit our brightly-lit, monster-free adoption facilities in Reading, Douglassville and Exeter staffed by friendly minions and meet some of our animals. We guarantee you'll have a pleasant and altogether horror-free time, and even if you don't adopt, we hope you'll tell your friends there's nothing scary about adoption!

Help us spread the word about adoptable pets by posting one of the banners below on your website or email! Linkback for our adoption pages is http://www.berkshumane.net/cms/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=43&Itemid=185. Thank you, and check back often, we're adding new ones all month long!

September 2012: Faux Paw!

Have you heard? It's a scandal. How embarrassing for them...our animals must not have heard that it's simply not done to wear white after Labor Day. We don't care! In fact, we're celebrating them! Through Friday, September 7th, adopt any animal with a white coat (or a partially-white coat, heck even a white paw) for just half of the regular adoption fee! Dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, small pets - doesn't matter! They might be improperly dressed, but they're still our furry friends!

May 2012: Crystal the Three Legged wonder!

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who visited Crystal, she's now relaxing in the comfort of her new home!

Crystal_Website_Deep

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, you have got to see her to believe her. Right here, behind this very curtain, is the most adorable, tiny puppy you've ever seen. Grievously injured by cruel fate, but rescued by the wonders of modern veterinary medicine! Crystal came to us at three months of age wrapped in a blanket with a severely broken leg, and unfortunately we were forced to amputate that leg to save her very life. That's right, Crystal is here before you alive and breathing because of one shelter's veterinary hospital, a certain canine catastrophe transformed into a affable adoptable animal with just a few quick and decisive strokes of the scalpel. You'll gasp at her cuteness, you'll beam at her perseverance, you'll marvel, in fact, as she plays and moves just like any other puppy. And if you've got what it takes to handle this comely, charming crackerjack Chihuahua, you can even take her home.

But wait a second, you might say, this certainly ain't the first surgery of this sort you've performed at the Humane Society. Why, isn't it true that you've adopted plenty of dogs after this procedure? Why the hub-bub, bub?

And here's our answer: yes, we've performed this surgery before, rescuing animals who in many other shelters would be euthanized, and preparing them instead for a long and happy life in a new adoptive home. And that's the real marvel, the true wonder behind the curtain: that procedures like these, once too difficult and expensive to consider for an organization like ours (and still out-of-reach for some others) are now becoming commonplace and almost routine, thanks to good folks like you who keep this show going day after day, night after night.

When we told you how important a veterinary hospital would be to our sheltering operations and to the community, you listened. Now we're able to offer services to people and animals that we wouldn't have previously dreamed of. And all it takes is a little planning, some hard work, and most importantly, help. One of the ways we fund miraculous veterinary procedures and wondrous adoption programs is through our special events. This spring, we'll be hosting the Art for Arf's Sake Art Auction at Reading's historic Sovereign Performing Arts Center. A tribute to classic sideshow, vaudeville and burlesque, it's sure to be an unforgettable evening - a singular entertainment, a real peach. This is the one you've read about, you've heard your neighbors talking about it, now's your chance to get up close and personal and see what all the fuss is about. Last year's auction raised the unbelievable sum of $110,000 for the animals and this year we're hoping to beggar even that magnificent munificence. The animals need it, and they need you. Click here to visit the Art for Arf's Sake page, view some of the early submissions and meet some of our famous friends, and most importantly reserve your seats right now. You don't want to miss this, but there's only so much room behind the curtain, folks!

Summer 2011: Help Rusty save more lives!

Rusty-copy

All summer long, adult cats at both our Reading and Douglassville locations were eligible for our Free to a Great Home adoption program in honor of Rusty, an 2009 HSBC alumnus whose owner, Claire Nelson, believes he alerted her to a potentially fatal heart attack. Claire partnered with the HSBC in the hopes of seeing more cats adopted into loving homes, and we're happy to report that we were successful!
