The Humane Society of Berks County’s Animal Rescue Team works with law enforcement to investigate illegal animal cruelty, targeting the worst cases of animal abuse in the region. Beginning with assistance with investigation and prosecution, our involvement continues with hands-on rescue, sheltering, and eventual placement of abused animals. HSBC helps the law enforcement agencies which are empowered and required by law to enforce cruelty laws by bringing our considerable and unique resources to their aid: highly trained and expert staff with decades of cruelty law enforcement experience, mobile medical and emergency vehicles, and a full veterinary response team. HSBC helps police do what they do best - prosecute criminals - by doing what we do best - helping animals in need. Together we work to ensure that animals in crisis get the swift help they need and cruelty law violators get the prosecution they deserve.
Do you suspect abuse? It not always as clear cut under the law as one may think. Here are two excellent resources offered by ASPCA and AHA which provide excellent step-by-step information on evaluating potential cruelty, gathering needed information, and reporting animal cruelty.
Remember: Police are required to respond to animal cruelty reports. If you see animal cruelty, call your local police and report it.
